BHRS TEAM:

Dr. Doug Polcin, the Program Director, has been an investigator and principal investigator of research studies since 1998. His academic background includes a doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Northeastern University in 1991 and a postdoctoral fellowship position at the University of California, Berkeley, the School of Public Health, 1996 to 1999.

Dr. Polcin worked as a Research Psychologist at the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics for 6 years and a Scientist and Senior Scientist at Alcohol Research Group, Emeryville, Ca for 13 years.  He has authored or co-authored over 82 peer reviewed publications and has received funding through the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The Behavioral Health and Recovery Studies Program (BHRS) was established in 2017 and is a part of the Public Health Institute (PHI), a 501-3-c non-profit organization established in 1964 and located in Oakland, California. 

The BHRS program is supported by a Program Manager, Program Scientists, Project Managers, Research Coordinators, Research Analysts, Subject Interviewers, and the PHI Central Office. The Program also collaborates with a number other Programs, Co-Investigators, Statisticians, Coordinators, and Analysts as needed for specific projects.

EXPERTISE:

We conduct clinical trials, program evaluations, and other studies of community based programs and services. Our primary areas of research address substance abuse, housing, and mental health issues.

BHRS LOCATION:

The BHRS Central office is located at the Public Health Institute in Oakland, Ca. The BHRS program has two locations in California. One based out of the Bay Area and the other in the Los Angeles area. Both offices are equipped to conduct clinical trials and the Bay Area office also provides all administrative support.

IRB:

PHI provides a local IRB for human subject studies. The Federal Assurance is FWA00000018, IRB00000775.
